The Torch has the ability to fly at nearly the speed of sound, and has sufficient ambient heat to vaporize projectiles that approach him. The Torch has been observed to vaporize rocks, bottles, bullets, and even steel girders in fractions of a second.
The utmost level of Johnny's power an extremely superheated form of plasma Johnny refers to as his "Nova Flame," which is usually released omni-directionally and reaches temperatures of 1,000,000 degrees. Unlike lower temperatures, Johnny runs the risk of burning himself with flames at this high a temperature. Johnny can also direct beams of "Nova Heat" as an offensive weapon for very brief periods of time before his heat energy gives out.
Johnny's abilities are limited by the quantity of oxygen in his environment, and has been extinguished by sufficient quantities of water, flame retardant foam, and vacuum environments. He can re-ignite instantly once oxygen is returned, with no ill effects. Johnny's near-impenetrable resistance to heat and flame has also been known to be breached by hellfire, given that it is mystical in nature.

But as exciting a gift as the muscle car was, it was a fateful trip to California to visit his older sister Sue that offered Johnny the opportunity to experience the ultimate thrill ride. Sue's fiancé Reed Richards had overseen the construction of an exploratory starship, but was in danger of losing funding. When the aeronautical engineer chose to make an immediate test flight with best friend Ben Grimm as pilot, Johnny and Sue insisted on accompanying as passengers.
Rather than the preeminent experience of Johnny's young life, the trip proved to be a disaster. In space, the starship unexpectedly encountered intense radiation, which mutagenically altered the bodies of all four crewmembers. Reed's body had taken the consistency of rubber, allowing him to will his flesh into any shape he desired. Susan found herself with the ability to turn invisible and invisible force fields. Ben was given (or perhaps cursed with) immense superhuman strength and a nearly invulnerable rocky hide. And last but certainly not least, Johnny acquired the ability to emit and envelop himself in fiery plasma. When Reed suggested that the four of them use their abilities to benefit humanity, Johnny jumped at the promise of adventure with the world's newest superteam, the Fantastic Four. Johnny took the name of “the Human Torch” in honor of the World War II hero of the same name.
While his star skyrocketed as a member of the Fantastic Four, Johnny returned to suburban Long Island to finish high school, hoping no one in the community would realize he was the Human Torch -- a fact that soon proved impossible to conceal. Rather than attempt to fight his newfound celebrity, however, Johnny embraced it, using his status as a member of the Fantastic Four to garner popularity. Along the way, he also developed a fierce rivalry with both Spider-Man and the X-Man known as Iceman.
Upon graduation, Johnny moved to the team's Baxter Building headquarters in New York City. Like any other family, the members of the Fantastic Four have endured their share of hardships -- remaining together because of their love for one another, not out of necessity. The baby of the bunch, the Torch has demonstrated a talent for tormenting the Thing. Ben and Johnny may bicker like brothers, but each is extremely protective of the other.
As time has worn on, Johnny has managed to escape his notorious status as the “junior member of the Fantastic Four”. Johnny has made no rush to grow up, continuing to be impetuous and hot-headed, charging into battle without restraint and leaving Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman to pick up the pieces in his wake -- and the Thing to pull his fat out of the fire. He continues to be a charming eligible bachelor as well, leaving an endless string of both superhuman and perfectly normal ex-girlfriends. In other ways, however, Johnny has matured. He has learned to restrain his celebrity and not abuse his status. He has also mended some fences, particularly with his longimte rival, Spider-Man. The two have become the best of friends, with Spider-Man even revealing his identity to Johnny.
As the Fantastic Four have encountered threat after threat over the years and disbanded a few times only to reform, Johnny has remained a stalwart member in most of the team's incarnations. Now, though, in light of the revelation of Reed's involvement with the so-called “Illuminati”, Johnny has come to question how well their “super-family” can hold together. Already, he has seen the strain the revealed secret has placed between Reed and Sue, with the two of them disagreeing over the much-debated Superhuman Registration Act. And while he has come to consider Reed family as much as he does Sue, Johnny finds himself siding with his sister in her stance against the SHR Act.

Between the maintenance staff, the office personnel, visitors for the world-renowned Fantastic Four, and of course the superteam itself, the place was usually buzzing with activity. But at this early an hour, all the staff and personnel were at home in bed. And no visitors would come at this ungodly hour unless it was an emergency. Even the Fantastic Four wasn't to be seen. Sue and Ben were probably still in bed. And Reed... well, he was probably in his lab burning the midnight oil. And the fourth member of the team? Well... he was busy with important work.

The room, illuminated only by the TV, flashed dark for a moment as Johnny Storm flipped the channel on the Fantastic Four's big screen TV. He was lounging in the Fantastic Four's spatious living quarters in the Baxter Building, a bowl of popcorn and bottle of Coca-Cola balanced on the leather sofa next to him. Johnny reached into the popcorn, and stuffed a handful into his mouth.

”Enzyte,” the voice said over the image of a guy grinning like a jackass, “The once daily supplement for NATURAL male enhancement.”
Johnny's eyes twinkled with amusement. He may have been alone, but his wit was still active, if only due to the fact that he amused himself.
“I don' need to steenkin' pills,” Johnny said in an exaggerated accent, “I'm male enhanced 'nuff already!”

Infomercials. Selling the Slicer-Dicer 50000 that makes french fries, peels fruit, and does your taxes. Or something. Johnny didn't know. Didn't care. He couldn't even think up a decent joke for that kinda stuff.

Oh, jeez. CNN. Like infomercials weren't bad enough. But before Johnny could flip the channel again, the news story caught his ear. Turning up the volume a little Johnny leaned forward to pay close attention.
”Industrialist Tony Stark left Washington late yesterday after testifying in closed session before the Senate select commitee on superhuman relations. When asked to comment on speculation about the possibility of a Superhuman Registration Act in light of recent events, Stark was uncharacteristically vague...
Johnny sniffed derisively. Vague. Yeah, like anybody had to wonder where he stood on this crap. He was neck deep in it... looking to have everyone of 'em tagged and collared. And it was looking like Reed was on the same side. This SHR Act wasn't doing anything but breaking up his family...
Suddenly, Johnny realized that the remote control he'd been holding was melting in his grip, surrounded by intense flame coming from his hand. Quickly extinguishing the flame, Johnny shook the remains of the remote onto the floor, where it became nothing more than a paperweight.
“I'm not going to stand around and let things get that screwed up,” Johnny grumbled, “I'll flash-fry Stark's ass myself if I have to.”
