All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts…
1763… The world is changing in this year. So many changes… The Seven Year War, otherwise known as the French and Indian War, is over. The Peace of Paris has been signed. But as much as every English Lord and Lady hopes, there is no true peace. The French are upset that they have lost the war and while the King of France, Louis XV, seems to be at peace with the young King George III, those who foresee the future sense otherwise. But George seems oblivious and only those who are close to him who think otherwise, including the eminence noire of England himself, Lord Beowulf Malloren, the Marquis of Rothgar.
Rothgar is close to the King of Britain, too close for some people’s liking. When the Earl of Bute, the acting Prime Minister resigned, George Grenville took the position. Grenville is jealous of Rothgar for one reason and one reason alone: Rothgar has the ear of the king; most anything Rothgar advises the King will do. For Rothgar has always had some intuition and it was that intuition that saved the King and his Queen from an attack shortly after their marriage. But that intuition made him a powerful enemy; Grenville is jealous of Rothgar. And jealousy can make people make rash decisions. And Grenville has made a rash decision that could cost everything, but to him, the decision was made wisely. After all, Grenvilly made the decision with a simple saying in his mind ‘my enemies enemy is my friend.’
But politics aside, the year 1763 is a magnificent year for the people of England. They are no longer at war with the French and many French Lords and Ladies have been bringing new fashions to the streets of London for months now. Styles change often and now that there is no more war, trade has increased. The economy has boomed and for now, London is at ease. But ease inevitably leads to difficulty. And those who see the signs of difficulty plan for the future.
And some of those who see the signs question the people who surround them. They wish to learn who their friends, allies, and enemies are before the time comes when they will need them. And the word Rouge has been causing stir for some time now, ever since the Rouges have been heard about. People believe they are the ones who can stop the difficult time ahead, but there are others who doubt them; people who say they are myth. But myth and legend has caused many problems, including family feuds, including the most infamous one in centuries, the feud between the Kilal’s and the Torrance’s.
But the future is not seen in two places that many nobles in London have started to take interest in. The first is only for gentleman, for no proper Lady would be seen their without her reputation tarnished and this is the gambling house in Pall Mall, Almack’s Club. The second place that Lords and Ladies have taken interest in is Johann Christian Bach's opera Orion, for it has been performed few times and people are all eager to see the magnificent play. Perhaps it is because they too, know that they are only acting on a stage. They are acting on the Stage of Life.
