Our Top Story tonight; there is a new superhero team on the block, the succesors to the Avengers. The Avengers disbanded sveral months ago following the deaths of three of their members and the destruction of their mansion by an unknown foe some speculate to be the Scarlet Witch.
Yesterday, the super-villain known as Electro shut down the SHIELD Raft Installation, the maximum security prison for all super-powered criminals. Trapped on the island were Former Spider-Woman and SHIELD Operative Jessica Drew, the super hero known as Daredevil, and the man known as Luke Cage. With the X-Men and Fantastic Four both powerless to respond, a large group of heroes individually leapt into action.
Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron-Man and Sentry helped to secure the island, although an unspecified number of villains escaped. It seems Captain America decided that they should be brought together as he issued the following statement:
"It seemed like fate to me that so many super-heroes should gather. After seeing how succesful we were working as a team I wondered if the time wasn't right to bring back the Avengers again... so I suggested it and I had a lot of agreement. Daredevil said he only works alone which we can respect, but the rest of us have decided to band together... I guess we're the New Avengers."
Another former Avenger and now New Avenger, Iron Man, has reportedly headquartered the team in Stark Tower. They claim their first objective is to round up the escaped inmates. It seems America has new protectors.
UPDATE: We have been reliably informed that two new Avengers have joined the team; the mutant known as Wolverine and a mysterious stranger named Ronin. We have also been told that the New Avengers will be seeking consultation from newly revealed mutant Professor Charles Xavier, as well as Reed Richards and several other heroes who have come out in favour of the New Avengers.
