Echo walked cautiously down the allyway, glancing around at the shabby buildings and the unfriendly looking doors leading into them. Maya had switched her gear, now she wore the gender disguising costume of Ronin, her other alias. No one who didn't know her as a close friend of acquaintance knew that Echo and Ronin were, indeed, the same person.
As she reached the end of the dark ally, Maya almost turned out onto another stretch of practically deserted road, when a door burst open just inches away from her, making Ronin jump back and curse the figure standing in the doorway.
The words didn't make it past her lips, however, when she saw the woman inside. She was beaten, bloody, and cowering upon the floor. The man, taking no notice of Ronin, wrapped meaty fingers through and around her hair and yanked the poor soul to her feet, throwing her out onto the step.
In a flash, Ronin had her swords drawn, and the man was standing as still as a statue, watching the two shining tips as they came close to his skin, almost caressing his neck. "Leave her be."
"This is none of your business, get those things out of my fa-" He tried to push the blades away, but stopped as they finally touched his skin, pressing two shallow marks on the sides of his neck, a slight trail of blood trickling down and over a vein that was pulsing there.
"Get out of the house. Keep walking until you start to smell the nice, clear air of the western beaches. And then you can start walking back." She smoothly turned and pushed him out the door, lowering her katana-like blades.
"Oh come on man, you've got to be kidding me! That's-" He raised his hands defensively as the figure beneath the mask lifted the swords again menacingly. "Ok, i'm goin..." He started off, glancing back every now and then.
When the man was out of sight, Ronin carefully lifted the woman, who was so beat up she could barely stand, and brought her inside the house. "Are you ok?"
"I will be... thank you... he-" she took a deep breath and continued, now dabbing at her wounds with a nearby towel. "He gets that way when he's drunk... lost his job..." The woman shook her head, and for the first time, Ronin noticed the single cradle standing, dark and silent, against the far wall.
Walking over to the cradle, dreading the sight, Ronin gazed into the folds of the blanket surrounding the bundle. The baby seemed unscathed. She turned back around. "So will you be ok? I will make sure your husband doesn't come back until he is good and sober."
Now the woman glanced up, a bit startled. "No, he's not my husband. I'll be fine, now. Thank you again."
And uh oh again. Wow. Without another word, Ronin left the house, and started off on the trail of the man, walking casually through the streets of DC.
((i know, this is from another RP, but i was so bored i decided to set this up for an open RP for someone...))
