THE STORY SO FAR [/u]
ESCALATION
Rumors began to leak of a Super Human Registration Act, and many heroes grew grim and began to whisper.... Iron man, who knew the Act was likely to pass, went to Latveria to see what Doctor Doom's stance would be- and if he would interfere- but was infuriated to learn that Captain America had asked Wolverine to tail him. Already mistrust was at a high.
Then the super-hero team of young people known as the New Warriors recklessly attacked a super-villain gang simply for "ratings" for their Reality TV show. One of the super-villains was Nitro, the living bomb, who promptly exploded in a tragedy that wiped out a massive portion of Stamford, Conneticut. Almost every hero in the country put aside their differences to help clean up after the disaster.
But the major effect was that Super Human Registration became almost certain.
LOOMING ON THE EDGE OF WAR
After this disaster, things went from bad to worse. As tempers flared and friendships were stretched to breaking point, Captain America paid a visit to the Punisher- the meeting did not go well and the Punisher swore to destroy Cap and his followers. The two sides of super-heroes were facing off and a split seemed inevitable.
In Genosha, Doctor Doom landed and proclaimed to the depowered Magneto that he had a way of getting his powers back. Greedily, Magneto agreed, and in the company of Dark Beast and the young girl Wicked they set off for Latveria- Doom had his OWN plans in mind....
A Super-Hero meeting was called. Both Iron man and Cap made eloquent speeches against and in favour of Registration. The meeting was interrupted by SHIELD operatives demanding that Captain America be arrested. Just to push things from "Disaster" to "catastrophe", the Punisher let off some bombs he had planted, blowing the face of the Daily Bugle building to shreds. Cap was blamed.
In the ensuing firefight in which heroes were forced to defend Cap or fight him, there was chaos. The Punisher was captured by Spider-Man after being attacked by many different sides, and Cap reluctantly escaped, knowing that he had to abandon his friends if there was to be any chance of fighting the new law. With the help of Doctor Strange, he managed to go underground. THe battle dispersed behind him- Cap was an outlaw, Strange was "aiding and abetting him", but the other Heroes hadn't done anything wrong... yet
But the Registration Act would soon be passed...
THE FIRST STAGES
Shortly after the escape of Strange and Cap, the Registration Act was passed by Congress. Meanwhile Captain America picked up Daredevil, now free of prison, for his team. Elsewhere, the Pro-Registration heroes gathered and began to discuss their options.
Baron Zemo and his team, the Thunderbolts, were recruited to the Pro-Registration Cause, and elsewhere the Young Avengers and Runaways discussed what they were going to do. In New York City, Cap discovered Clint Barton- 'Hawkeye', who had been killed when the Avengers Disassembled- apparantly during the House of M reality-warping fiasco, the Scarlet Witch brought Hawkeye back after her reality warping, possibly as a way of apology to the Avengers for all she had done.
Cap's team steadily grew until it also included the Human Torch, Multiple Man, and several others. They continued super-heroing, trying to discover more about the mysterious '42'. The Fantastic Four debated over what side they were truly on, Johnny abandoning them to join Cap with the Invisible Woman uncertain.
The Punisher meanwhile broke free of prison, continuing his vendetta against Captain America....
THE CLOUDS BURST
The Super Hero Registration Act officially became law
Captain America became moody and retired to the basement for several weeks, his keen mind plotting out how to win the now inevitable war. Meanwhile his team paid visits to several other groups, including the X-Men. There was nearly a skirmish at X-Mansion, and the Anti-Registration force were forced to leve, though they did recruit Emma Frost.
Meanwhile, the Young Avengers and the Runaways joined forces after an attack by the Punisher, and an uneasy alliance ensued. Captain America emerged from his basement with a shocking announcement; he planned to take the Anti-Registration New Avengers to confront the rest in the hopes of heading off the conflict- though secretly he believed he himself would die in preventing it....
