Name: Helmut Zemo
Aliases: Citizen V, Phoenix
Age: (Due to immersion in 'Compound X' Zemo's age has been slowed. Could be 75-80 years of age, give or take a decade if marvel time is taken into account)
Gender: Male
Side: Pro-Registration
Appearance: Helmut Zemo is 5'10" in height, and weighs 183 lbs. He sports his bloodline's trademark blond hair and blue eyes, however, he is severely scarred, (note- the nature of his newfound powers brings the extent of the damage into question). Baron Zemo wears a masked hood encircled by a golden crown, which is intentionally similar to the infamous mantle that his father wore. Sleek and athletic, Zemo appears young, though he carries himself with the confidence of a emperor.
Powers: Aside from his extremely slowed aging, Baron Zemo also possesses powerful moonstones of alien origin. Not only do these gems allow him to greatly increase his physical prowess, they also allow Zemo to manipulate the forces of matter, space/time, and various natural energy fields. Examples include warp portals, stacking multiple locations, and molecular phasing, among other more closely guarded powers. Other abilities include firearm proficiency, 60+ years of swordsmanship, tactical command, and mastery over numerous technologies. He has been known to use his father's death rays and adhesive-X, from time to time. Zemo is also protected from psychic assault by means of a grid of electronics placed within his hood.
History: Originally Captain America sidekick Bucky Barnes' young adversary, Helmut Zemo was a super-villain from the day he was old enough to glue his hands together with Adhesive-X. Born to the renowned Nazi Scientist, Baron Heinrich Zemo, Helmut was destine to rule over humanity.
After the apparent death of Captain America and Bucky at the hands of his father, Helmet remained in Europe, while Heinrich moved away to form the Masters of Evil. Despite verbal and physical abuse, Helmut remained devoted to his family during his absence from his father's watchful eye. Helmut's isolation did not last long, and the young adult eventually returned to the base of operations for his father's Masters of Evil.
At Heinrich's side, Helmut was once again indoctrinated in the schools of misinformation and manipulation, believing his father to be a visionary, and natural leader of men. Things fell apart when the original Captain America, (discovered to be alive) and his Avengers clashed for a final time with the current incarnation of the masters of evil, ending in the death of Heinrich Zemo. Blaming Steve Rogers, Helmut swore to not rest until the world was finally rid of Captain America.
After much training, Helmut Zemo, under the guise of 'the Phoenix, confronted Captain America, and his partner the Falcon. Not yet ready for the big leagues, Zemo was tragically knocked into a vat of his father's own Adhesive X, an ironic twist that would not be lost on the young villain. Hideously scarred, Helmut crawled away to lick his wounds.
Stepping into his role as the new Baron Zemo, Helmut masterminded multiple attacks on the Avengers in retaliation for the loss of his parents, rationalizing that the super group was the closest thing the Captain had to a family. The conflict came to a head when Baron Zemo and company took the Avengers Mansion, only to forcibly relinquish it to a rallied group of desperate heroes. Possibly in karmic retaliation for torturing Jarvis and the other occupants of the mansion, Zemo suffered a devastating fall in the final battle with Captain America. Zemo was thought dead, and the Avengers began to pick up the pieces.
After many failed attempts to avenge his father, Zemo reassembled the Master of Evil. Apparently slain by the mutant menace, Onslaught, the Avengers were no longer an accessible target for Zemo's revenge. Helmut began to examine his life, and his father's legacy, only to conclude that it was his father's own obsession with Captain America that eventually claimed his life, and that it would be foolish for him to make the same error. Zemo went back to his roots to find new focus for his life. From right out of Heinrich's childhood tales of conquest, Helmut assumed the mantle of the long-defeated hero, Citizen V, disguising the Masters of Evil as a new heroic team, the Thunderbolts.
If justice, as they say, strikes like lightning, then Baron Zemo would have been the lighting rod. His former Masters of Evil, fond of their new public adoration, turned on Helmut's plans for world domination. Helmut may not have escaped from the wrath of Moonstone, who greatly overpowered him, if not for his father's former admirer and long-time Master of Evil, Erik "Atlas" Josten. The betrayal forced Zemo so see the err of his ways, and how for good or evil, he squandered the potential of his thunderbolts.
Helmut escaped the Thunderbolts, only to be assassinated by former Steve Rogers sidekick, the en-scourged Jack "Nomad" Monroe. Utilizing the technology of his then partner, Techno, Zemo's consciousness implanted itself in the body of the true heir to the Citizen V legacy, John Watkins. Again posing as Citizen V, circumstances forced Helmut to live the life of a reluctant hero as a member of the Redeemers.
After the Redeemers were wiped-out in a battle with Gravitron, Zemo drifted to the aid of the Thunderbolts as a disembodied personality in the tech-pack of the Thunderbolt Fixer. When the Thunderbolts were pulled into the Counter-Earth reality created by Franklin Richards, Zemo was lucky enough to steal the scar-less body of the alternate Helmut Zemo, while still maintaining the guise of being "morally stable." The Thunderbolts triumphantly left Counter-Earth as heroes with a purpose.
Their escape complete, the Thunderbolts became celebrities, though many heroes were still suspicious, especially the Avengers, who had every reason to distrust Zemo in particular. When the Thunderbolts created the global energy-absorbing Liberator project, no one was more skeptical than the Avengers. Discovering Moonstones secret fail-safe, intended to use global energy to empower her alien gems, the Avengers immediately, and falsely, blamed Zemo. This led to yet another conflict between the two super groups. In the aftermath, Zemo was horribly scarred again, this time shielding Captain America from Moonstone. Although his intentions remain unclear, Zemo has regained much of his former respect, although strangely Steve Rogers still believes him a threat.
Baron Zemo was not completely selfless, as he absconded with the unconscious Moonstone's powerful gems. Learning how to use this new power has become Zemo's new obsession, reinvigorating his desire for power over the masses. Has he reformed, or is he up to his old tricks? Not even Helmut may know for sure.
Sample Post: The ghostly vortex seemed to spring from the darkness. A hush fell over committee as the instantly recognizable figure of Baron Helmut Zemo materialized like a dim reflection from behind the podium.
"Good evening, gentlemen. I am delighted that you have requested my input on this most... delicate matter." Baron Zemo shifted into a someone disrespectful slouch, retaining eye contact with the committee from the safety of his headquarters.
"I assume your time is valuable, as is mine, so I shall make this brief. Let us not sugar-coat the truth of the matter, nor deny this most unpleasant reality. You, the policy makers of this great nation. have been forced to take a backseat to the incompetent, and often inexcusable initiative of the super human individuals within your jurisdiction. I come to you now as a member of this community, this elite subclass of citizens who live outside the laws that bind our nation." Zemo straightens up, gesturing with his hands, impassioned by his captive audience.
"I believe you know why the Thunderbolts, with our complicated past, have been called into service by our leaders. We understand the nuances of law, the harsh actualities most heroes never stick around to witness. We understand that discipline is a most important tool in reaching our shared vision, however we also understand that a fresh start is invaluable to building trust within the superhuman community. What I propose is not leniency, but far from it..."
(a new spin on this classic Zemo)
Today, behind closed doors, we reached a unanimous decision.
