Mutation/Powers: Daredevil’s remaining senses are superhumanly acute, and have been demonstrated to be some of the sharpest known to the Marvel Universe.
His sense of touch is so acute that his fingers can feel the faint impressions of ink on a printed page, allowing him to literally read by touch. The rest of his skin is equally sensitive, enabling him by concentration to feel minute temperature and pressure changes in the surrounding atmosphere. Even with his senses of smell and hearing blocked, he can still feel the presence of a person standing 5 feet away from him, simply by his or her body heat emanations and air disturbances.
Daredevil’s sense of smell is so acute he can distinguish between identical twins at 20 feet by minute differences in smell. He can detect odors of an atmospheric concentration of 30 parts per million. Further, his ability to remember smells enables him to identify any person he has spent at least five minutes with by smell alone, no matter how he or she might try camouflaging his or her natural scent. His powers of concentration are such that he can focus upon a single person’s scent and follow it through a crowd of people at a distance of approximately 50 feet.
His sense of taste is so sharp, it enables him to detect the number of grains of salt on a pretzel. His ability to remember tastes enables him to determine every ingredient of a food or drink he tastes, as long as there are at least 20 milligrams of that substance present.
Daredevil’s sense of hearing enables him to detect an acoustic pressure change of 1 decibel at a pressure level of 7 decibels (whereas the lowest threshold for average Human hearing is 20 decibels). He can hear a person’s heartbeat at a distance of over 20 feet, or people whispering on the other side of a standard soundproofed wall. Daredevil can tell whether a person is lying by listening to changes in his heartbeat (though he can be fooled by a pacemaker, or those able to control their own heartbeat), and can identify people by the specific patterns of their heartbeats. Through practice, Daredevil is able to control his hearing acuity, mentally blocking out specific sounds like his own breathing and heartbeat, all ambient sounds to a normal Human level of perception, or all sounds but a particular sound he is concentrating upon. If taken by surprise, Daredevil can suffer more distress from a painfully loud sound than an ordinary Human would. Also, beyond a certain size, crowds of people can create too many sensory impressions for him to easily sort through. Daredevil’s superhumanly acute hearing is also the key to his sonar. He is sensitive to the minute sounds of his own body (heartbeat, blood circulation, breathing, pulses, digestion, etc.), as well as the sounds of the world outside of himself, and through the interpretation of the combined data, he is able to synthesize real-time sonar. Sound waves down to the lowest acoustic pressure he can detect bounce off and partially penetrate objects, allowing him to “see” a surprisingly detailed image of his environment. Sound quality is also affected by object density, which will permit Daredevil to actually ‘see’ through some objects, showing them to be less dense than others. A glass, for instance, will be seen as a relatively transparent object, allowing other sounds to fairly easily penetrate, as does Human flesh. For instance, in total silence, the sounds of his own body bouncing off of objects in his vicinity will provide him with a 3-dimensional, 360° image of everything the sound waves bounce off of and return to him from. When dealing with another person, his sonar will provide him an image return from every sound. The sound of their own voice and heartbeat will resonate through their bodies and travel outward to Daredevil, who has the ability to instantly interpret this data into a 3-D image that is like a strikingly thorough sonographic reading of their bodies. Through them, he can ‘watch’ their blood circulate, their hearts beat, etc. The refresh rate of his ‘sonar’ varies; with every new sound, there is a new sonic return that refreshes his image of the outside world. For instance, with each heartbeat, there is a bounce-back of the sound, and a refreshed image. Several sounds working simultaneously make a near-constant image refresh rate; if walking, the footsteps (and their possible echoes off other solid objects) will prompt other image refresh, as will the sound of voices, others’ hearts and respiration, etc.
Perhaps one of his more striking powers is what he calls his Radar Sense. According to one theory, Daredevil’s “radar sense” functions via his brain’s generation of energy within a certain portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The signal emanates from sending regions of his brain, after which it travels outward, bounces off objects around him, and returns to receiving regions of his brain. This paranormal ability stems from a mutated portion of his brain that is extremely sensitive to the electromagnetic energies it emits. These energies radiate outward at the speed of light, strike objects, and bounce back, similar to the mechanism of conventional radar. Older-style radar units rely upon a rotating dish. As the dish rotates and emits radar pulses, it only presents a picture that is similar to a ‘slice’, and incapable of showing it’s entire area, simultaneously. Newer (circa later 20th – early 21st century) radar technologies feature what is called the “phased array”. Phased array radar moves the radar beams across the array, without moving the array, itself. These electronically steered beams move quickly enough to present a ‘whole’ picture, and can show the entire scanned area, simultaneously. As this radiation extends outwards, it stops against objects, and a portion of it is reflected back into a ‘receiving region’ of Daredevil’s brain that is capable of instantaneously interpreting the data. The ‘refresh’ rate of Daredevil’s radar image is extremely fast, at a rate of approximately 60 times per second (similar to the frequency of power waves). Images are interpreted as 3 dimensional objects, and if close enough, they can be seen with an incredible amount of detail. If close enough, Daredevil is capable of seeing some facial features of people, though this is generally limited to eye socket and mouth placement; it is not sufficient to see such things as expressions, nor will it register such things as discolorations (like moles). The closer objects are, the sharper and more precise the return. The maximum effective range of Daredevil’s radar (or proximity sense) is not known, but at approximately 80’ (80 feet/24.4 meters), he can clearly resolve a flagpole against a background of other objects. There is also depth perception and the ability to see movement with this sense. He is able to determine that while 2 objects may appear to be on top of each other, they may, in reality, be several yards/meters away from one another. He can also see the difference between a stationary and a static object. It is possible that this ‘radar’ sense may be the result of Daredevil’s sensitivity to the minute electrical radiation emitted by his own brain. The image data provided by his ‘radar sense’ is both 3-dimensional and effective over 360°. There appears to be no limit to how many individual objects Daredevil’s radar can track; he has demonstrated the capability to see individual snowflakes, during a blizzard. Too many objects, however, can result in the obfuscation of other objects.
Daredevil’s body is incredibly heat-sensitive, allowing him to “see” objects and people by their heat properties, whether they are generating heat, or merely reflecting it. This provides him with an analog of thermographic vision. In the examination of people, Daredevil can see them as patterns of hotter and cooler zones, much like a thermograph. Thermographs show the distribution of heat throughout the body, and show which body areas are hotter than others. Electronic monitors detail the areas of hottest to coolest through the use of various colors, with shades like red and white being the hottest, trailing down into black for cool or cold areas. Even through such obstructions as walls and vehicular bodies, Daredevil is capable of receiving this data (though the construction of some walls and some substances can degrade the amount of data received, by blocking some thermal radiation transmissions) with high levels of accuracy and thoroughness. From outside of a conventional home, Daredevil, through heat emissions alone, can determine how many people are in the house, their locations, and even their general states of health. When examining machinery, Daredevil can determine how long it’s been since the machine has been active (such as with vehicles, since he can measure how cold the engine is in respect to the temperature of the rest of the vehicle). He can also determine by residual heat emissions how long it’s been since an object had been touched, and by ambient thermal levels, how long it’s been since someone’s been inside of a certain area. For instance: upon entering a building, by examining the ambient heat levels in respect to such things as central heating machinery, Daredevil can tell if someone’s been in there before he has, how long ago, and if they’re still in the area. With his ability to glean so much data from thermal radiation, Daredevil can use this as a barometer of moods. He can monitor such things as blood circulation, heat build-ups, etc. When a person blushes, their faces can take on more blood than normal, increasing thermal levels, which Daredevil can easily detect. If he encounters a dead body, he can determine how long the person has been deceased through body temperature, and even by gauging the temperature of individual organs (such as the liver, which many forensic technicians and physicians utilize to determine time of death).
The mutations that have heightened Daredevil’s level of sensitivity have also increased his awareness of other forms of electromagnetic radiation, aside from heat. He has demonstrated the ability to detect infrared radiation, gamma radiation, alpha and beta particles, electricity, etc. This is just as well-developed as his ability to sense and interpret heat-related data, relaying highly-detailed imagery similar in composition to his natural thermograph. For instance, he can tell how radioactive an object is, if anything or anyone in the area has been irradiated, and what direction the irradiated object or being is traveling. Daredevil can tell through this sensitivity how high solar UV (Ultraviolet) radiation levels are from the sun, as well as differentiate between such things as UV-A, UV-B, etc. Due to his prior exposures to various types of radiation, Daredevil can recognize and differentiate between certain types of radiation (he can tell the difference between infrared radiation, microwaves, x-rays, ultraviolet radiation, gamma rays, electrical energy, and alpha and beta particles). He is also fully capable of interpreting the data from various spectra of radiation, simultaneously, getting a highly detailed image of his environment. Naturally, the stronger the source is, the easier it is to detect. Generally, the only limit to the range of Daredevil’s ability to detect electromagnetic radiation is the distance the radiation can travel; extremely weak radiation is unable to even penetrate a sheet of paper, and therefore highly unlikely for Daredevil to detect at a distance of several blocks away. However, it should be noted that while Daredevil can detect radio waves, this does not give him the ability to modulate or demodulate signals, and hear what is being said; he could only detect the presence of the radiation, and possibly even home in on the source. He is sensitive enough to determine if a cellular phone is on, simply by the detection of the power waves; the higher they are, the more likely it is that it is on, due to the powering of various systems (such as the display); the lower they are, the less likely (indicating it is merely power contained within the battery, and with a small current circulating through the processor to keep the clock working). Daredevil has an ability to differentiate colors in objects and beings by the wavelengths of radiation they reflect when struck by visible light. However, the range of this is extremely limited, on the order of several inches/centimeters. At close-range, it is possible for Daredevil to become aware of the microvoltage in another Human Being’s brain. Some late 20th - early 21st century devices are capable of scanning brainwaves to find areas of the brain that are more or less active than others, and this technology is also being adapted to replace the familiar polygraph (lie-detector). It is possible Daredevil can utilize this ability to determine a person’s verisimilitude. Functioning like an EEG (Electro-Encephalogram), Daredevil can make limited scans of others’ brains.
Daredevil’s primary, long-range sensory ability, in lieu of his loss of sight, is the combination of his radar, spectrograph and sonar, leaving him with the ability to sense the outside world oft-times razor sharpness and clarity. Working in synergy, they provide far more data than eyesight and hearing does in normal Human Beings, and even in others with peak Human or superhuman senses, such as Captain America or Wolverine. Through his intense powers of concentration, Daredevil is able to quickly and accurate interpret the data relayed through his senses and take swift and decisive action, ranging from reaching out to grab a handhold while in freefall, to the evasion of a bullet.
Another superhuman ability Daredevil possesses is his powers of agility, dexterity and reflex. Daredevil has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to literally evade a bullet fired at point-blank range. He has shown unerring precision with thrown and missile weapons, including his own clubs, which he’s wielded with accuracy that seems beyond the ability of a normal Human Being to duplicate. In more than one occasion, Daredevil has used his clubs to literally stop or deflect the rounds of firearms, and send them back at those that fired them with pin-point accuracy. He has waded through hails of gunfire and fragments, without sustaining a single injury, and shown that it takes shooters of uncanny ability to actually hit him, such as Punisher.
History/Background:
Abandoned by his mother, Matt Murdock was raised by his father, boxer "Battling Jack" Murdock, in Hell's Kitchen. Realizing that rules were needed to prevent people from behaving badly, young Matt decided to study law; however, when he saved a man from an oncoming truck, it spilled a radioactive cargo that rendered Matt blind while enhancing his remaining senses. Under the harsh tutelage of blind martial arts master Stick, Matt mastered his heightened senses and became a formidable fighter. He also attended Columbia University Law School alongside his best friend, Franklin "Foggy" Nelson; but before Matt earned his Juris Doctorate degree, his father was murdered by agents of the Fixer (Roscoe Sweeny) for refusing to throw a fight. Enraged when the legal system failed to bring the Fixer to justice, Matt donned a costume made from his father's boxing robe and went into action as "Daredevil," savagely beating his father's killers and frightening the Fixer himself to death.
Establishing a small New York law firm with Foggy, Matt vowed to serve the law as Matt Murdock and to fight evils beyond the law's reach as Daredevil. Over the years, he has fought many super-criminals, including Mister Fear,Stilt-Man, Gladiator, Purple Man and Jester (Jonathan Powers), as well as crime lords such as the Kingpin and the Owl. He has loved and fought alongside both the Black Widow and Elektra.
Although Daredevil and the Punisher both fight crime, they often clash over the Punisher's lethal tactics. During an early encounter, Daredevil shot the Punisher to prevent him from killing drug-dealer Peter "Hogman" Grunter. Since then, Daredevil has worked with the Punisher when necessary, but has also attempted to bring him to justice. Daredevil formed the "Marvel Knights" to apprehend the Punisher, who escaped police custody thereafter. Later, Daredevil teamed with Spider-Man and Wolverine in a failed attempt to take down the Punisher, who told Daredevil that the only way to stop him was to kill him.
Recently, Daredevil's secret identity was exposed by a tabloid and he definitively defeated the Kingpin in public, declaring himself New York's new kingpin. To avoid disbarment, Murdock has been forced to publicly and legally deny his dual identity, though the public remains unconvinced. He is currently incarcerated at Rikers Island Penitentiary awaiting trail for vigilante acts commited as Daredevil.

"It's cold out here. I can sense it well. As I can smell the bad guys miles away from here. But this was something we can never expect. This event triggered negative public opinion against the super heroes, in which sole blame from the public was placed, and Captain America being propositioned by S.H.I.E.L.D. to become part of the enforcement of super heroes to register, but he refused, and after being attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives, went underground. Iron Man, however, was in full support of the act and convinced Spider-Man to join his cause. This was surely a big lost for Captain America's side. I can't also think what Iron Man really used and convinced Spiderman to join his team."
"I'm sure it would be easier for anyone of us to stay away from this...Civil war or even live in shadows. But this is not the right choice to solve these problems. We are living weapons of mass destruction for the majority of the public but this is not the problem. What if you use the same weapon your enemy did ? I don't know if my destiny is to face one of my own, another mutant, but one this is for sure. I will not stand in the darkness waiting for the last result of the war. I will participate with all my abillities and powers. I will fight for this thing it makes me different from the others. That's why I'm Daredevil..."
